Glacier National Park in Montana

A reliable internet connection has been hard to come by, imagine that in 2006?
Our last post ended in a server failure so this is the second try………

We have been busy with the National Parks. We spent 5 days in Glacier NP and have moved on to Yellowstone & Grand Teton NPs, but this post will just focus on Glacier.

We saw moose, elk, pronghorn, big horn sheep & marmots, no luck with the bears in Glacier. The mountain, lake and glacier features were incredible and made us want to go back for longer to see it all. There are so many good hikes.

We stayed at a KOA outside of St Mary and they were very nice people who even watched Rosie on our long days. On our first day we took an all-day tour on the Jammer busses. They took us over the Going-to-the-sun road that traverses the park. It has some very narrow roads that keeps your eyes off the scenery, it was nice not to drive for a day. The weather was all over the place for the day, from sun, rain, sleet to snow, a big difference from the 100+ weather in the Badlands.

I got to fulfill one on my life to do’s, I stepped foot on a glacier, Grinnell Glacier to be exact. Taryn didn’t make the entire trek, there was a difficult water crossing, very small rocks across a fast moving stream right on the edge of the glacier lake. One false move and you were swimming in the deep cold water…. We lucked out on the glacier hike and had a ranger lead the group (Ranger Rick from MA) . Our other major hike (@ 12 miles) was the highline trail that followed the cliffs and mountains above the main Going-to-the-sun road that runs through the park. It stopped half way at Granite Park Chalet with awesome views and then it was a torturous 4 mile hike downhill.

We finally broke out the fishing equipment down in Two Medicine, man my fly fishing is rusty !… I had a hit from a small trout (the water is crystal clear so you can see everything and they can see you), but landed no fish, 1st time skunked this season… hopefully Chris & Dave are doing well with the blue/stripers and bonito. At the end of our hike down the river we saw two moose come out of the woods and drink, it was cool to see them on the same level but not to close!

Currently we are exploring Yellowstone and Grand Teton, over the next week we will post our activities…….. feel free to reply to the posts.

Keith

Wow! Those are some great photos! Graham and I will definitely have to make it there someday -- right after we go to Yellowstone, because I'm one of like, TWO people in the entire world who've never been there. ;)

You guys sound as though you're having the time of your lives. Keep having those adventures, and travel safely!
