So the preparations have begun.
We just went on a shopping trip in Maine to stock up on hiking supplies. We got a few camel packs, convertible pants, rain gear, wicking shirts and loaded up on the hiking boots...low hikers, mid hikers and tall hikers. Nothing will ruin a trip faster than bad shoes. We still have some big purchase items to go...especially the laptop computer. This computer will be essential to our successful trip. Once it is hooked up to the GPS we'll be able to travel and find our destinations with ease. Let me tell you it is not easy maneuvering that big RV on bumpy back roads after you make a wrong turn. And to find a place to turn around, yeh right!! You pretty much travel way out of your way to find a connecting road again.
So, with the shopping under control we've only need to finish the last maintenance on the RV and the truck and we are ready. Keith just replaced the trucks u-joint to a more durable type and will perform the final synthetic oil replacement next month. That way we shouldn't have to do any maintenance on the truck while we are on the road. (Keep your fingers crossed!) K's also going to have the bearings repacked on the RV considering all the miles we put on last year and the 8,000 miles we'll put on during the trip. Also, he just bought a huge jack so that we could replace the RV tires if necessary. There are so many things you need to prepare for. Thankfully K is taking care of all that maintenance and T just needs to worry about inside the RV.
T reorganized all the cabinets to make the more commonly used items more accessible. After our 1 week trip in the fall last year, we realized that we couldn't manage without some of the basic necessities...a toaster, a coffee maker and a good cast iron skillet . Thankfully we got those for Christmas gifts. T also made a cubbyhole for the cats by removing one of the RV storage panels and replace it with a cat accessible door with their litter pan and food. We've brought them out to the RV each a couple of times. Each exposure they get a little more comfortable. We're planning to take them for the weekend camping trip over Memorial weekend. This will be the first real test to see how this is all going to work. We know that Rosie isn't a problem...she went camping with us all last season and the RV is just a second home to her. Cats are a little less adaptable...but taking them with us is still a better idea than having them kenneled for 3 months.
Now it is time for the mental preparation.
